It's no secret that America is in the midst of an economic struggle. Unemployment rates are dangerously high, finances tighter than ever, and many working class Americans are fighting just to make ends meet. With so much to worry about, energy efficiency most often does not make the priority list's top cut. However, there are ways to increase energy efficiency that actually put money in your pocket.

Take on simple amenity for example: water heating. Water heaters are the second largest consumer of energy in the average American household. The hot showers we take and the hot water we run from our faucets make up about 20 percent of our anual energy use. A standard water heater (a storage heater) actually wastes between 15 and 30 percent of that energy to heat water when it is not being used. That translates into a substantial financial loss over time.
